At the Old School House Nursery, we are committed to making every day special. A high ratio of dedicated staff provide each child with the appropriate support to thrive during the nursery day.
Our day is planned sensitively and responsively to children's interests, whilst considering the importance of familiar routines to ensure children feel safe and secure and develop confidence.
At the start of the day, children are welcomed in to nursery via our colourful cloakroom, where each child has their own peg and wellie boot box. Children are asked to keep a pair of wellies and soft indoor shoes at nursery for their comfort.
Once the children are settled in, we have 'circle time' where children are encouraged to share news and points of interest, and we also have a ‘letter of the week’. Children are welcome to bring something in from home for the ‘special table’, linking in to the week’s letter. We will often have a song and dance at the start of circle time – The Grand Old Duke of York being a favourite!
During the session, children may choose from a number of fun and stimulating adult focused and child initiated activities to encourage their exploration, learning and play through interest and discovery. Activities range from cooking such as bread & pizza making, to a wide array of arts & crafts projects.
Mid morning, children sit down at tables & chairs in our kitchen and enjoy a healthy snack and a drink of milk or water.
We recognise the enjoyment and learning opportunities provided by the outdoor environment. During every session, children are encouraged to explore the outdoors enjoying activities in our well-equipped, secure garden complete with water rill, willow house, wobbly bridge, sandpit, slide and play houses.
Sharing a story together is often our chosen group activity with which to end the morning session before moving on to lunch.
At lunchtime, children enjoy the opportunity to further develop their independence and social skills and join together with staff to enjoy either a packed lunch or a hot meal provided by Helmingham Primary School which shares our site.
In the afternoon, activities are centred around working with children of similar ages or stages of development. As children's skills develop, we will introduce activities to extend their learning.
After lunch, children enjoy using our cosy ‘book room’ - a lovely place to sit and relax on soft floor mats, rugs and beanbags and look at the range of books we have, or sometimes listen to a story on our audio book player. We can also accommodate children napping here if they are tired.
Children are also given the opportunity to learn basic French on a Thursday morning by our visiting teacher. It is a wonderful class using puppets and other fun props which the children love.
